About | Course Schedule | Mixed Seminars | Durango/Silverton | Ouray

3 Day Mixed Climbing Seminar:

Mixed Climbing is a diverse sub sport with roots in ice, alpine, aid, and sport climbing. Success in mixed climbing requires creativity, and a willingness to adapt and integrate skills from a variety of styles. Mixed climbing can range from horizontal roof climbing, to pitch after pitch of snow covered rock in an alpine environment. Because mixed climbing is so wide ranging, our guides, Ryan Nelson, and Jared Ogden will focus the instruction on techniques for all styles of climbing rock and ice.

General Information & Itinerary

The Mixed Climbing Seminar is designed for climbers with previous ice climbing and/or mixed climbing experience that want to learn the tools and techniques required to take their climbing to the next level. The goal of the course is to help you develop your own mental framework with regards to not only what is capable, but how to take the steps necessary to achieve a more efficient, safe, and fluid method of climbing.

  • Day 1: The seminar will begin with a review of ice climbing technique and the use of footwork and tool placements utilized to climb steep ice (WI 4-5). Progressing towards more advanced topics, leashless climbing technique will be introduced by the instructors and participants will be required to begin to utilize this technique on steep ice. Later in the day, this technique, and it's subtleties, will be applied to mixed rock and ice. Location: Cascade Canyon, Durango.
  • Day 2: Building upon the concepts covered the previous day, the day's instruction will focus on topics such as placement testing, pull direction, footwork, reading the rock, anticipation, as well as rest and relaxation techniques. Location: Ouray Ice Park.
  • Day 3: The final day of the course will allow the participants to "put it all together" and hone their mixed technique on a variety of climbs. Advanced mixed climbing topics such as tool matching, strategies for overhanging routes, and new wave footwork will also be covered. Location: Ouray Ice Park or Skylight (conditions dependent).
