Day 1 : Depart U.S. for Quito arriving late evening. The guide will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel.
Day 2 : Spend today in Quito acclimating. The guide will meet with you this day in preparation for the upcoming climbs. This is an important day to check everyone's gear and do any last minute shopping before departing Quito.
Day 3 : Our initial acclimatization hike takes place at Pasachoa National Park. We hike on well maintained trails to the shoulder of the extinct volcano then along the rim to our high point for the hike. We spend the night at a hotel near the town of Lasso.
Day 4 : After a short but rough drive we hike to a saddle below Illiniza Norte then up to the Summit (16,813 ft.). Illiniza Norte is a straight forward, but strenuous hike. It is one of the best acclimatization peaks in the country. We return to our hotel in Lasso.
Day 5 : Today we travel to the Jose Ribas Hut (15,800 feet) on Cotopaxi. This involves a short but strenuous hike.
Day 6 : As we continue our adjustment to the altitude, we spend today on a low section of the glacier where we work on glacier travel skills, techniques, and the general procedures that we will use in our ascents. This is also an important acclimatization day.
Day 7 : We leave for the summit attempt around midnight. By dawn, we move past the right hand corner of the Yanasacha Wall (18,000 feet). The route is steep in sections beyond the wall but straight forward climbing takes us to the summit by noon and back to the hut by mid afternoon. After descending to the road, we drive down to the lower valley for the evening.
Day 8 : Additional summit day if necessary. Alternatively, we will return to Quito to celebrate our successful climb!
Day 9 : Return to the U.S. on an early morning flight.
