Backpacking, Mountaineering, and Backcountry Overnight Trips - We can arrange a number of trips depending on the time frame, age, and experience of your group. We require that we maintain a maximum 4 persons per 1 Southwest Adventure Guide for non-technical or climbs of low technical requirements, and a maximum 2:1 ratio for climbs of a technical nature. Our guides and trip leaders are the most highly experienced professionals in the area, and can lead you and your group on a backcountry adventure you won't soon forget!

2008 Costs: Private Guide Services

Non-technical Mountain Day: $305 for 1:1, $105 for each additional person.

A Non-technical Mountain Day is characterized by backpacking trips in the San Juan Mountain Range that do not require technical climbing (ropes, harness, etc.) of any kind.

Mountain Day: $325 for 1:1, $125 for each additional person

A Mountain Day is characterized by long arduous approaches to camps in the Grenadier Range (Vestal Basin, Jagged Peak, Storm King Peak, etc.) or front country climbs on peaks such as Snowdon Peak or Engineer Mountain.

Technical Mountain Day: $350 for 1:1, $150 for each additional person

A Technical Mountain Day is characterized by 4th or 5th class climbing on peaks remote in nature, such as those found in Vestal or Chicago Basins, and throughout the Grenadier Range in the San Juan Mountains.

Porter Fee (optional): $200 per porter per day

  • For train access trips there is an additional $75 fee per guide and/or porters.

Trip Cost Includes: Airport transfers in Durango. Guide for the duration of the trip, tents and cook gear, and all group technical equipment required to safely climb and hike in the mountains.

Not Included: Hotel costs before, during or after the courses. D&SNGRR; train tickets (if applicable), 3% land use surcharge, rental equipment, $3 Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue card-which is required, trip cancellation insurance, personal climbing or camping equipment, or gratuities.

Add-ons (Let us take care of all the details!):

  • Trip Food (Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner): $15 per person per day
  • Climbing Equipment: Cost varies according to needs.
  • Train Tickets (for trips requiring train access): $75 per person

Prices are valid for pre booked, pre-paid groups only. We require that a Southwest Adventure Guides LLC liability waiver is signed by all participants and by parents of minors. If you do not have one of these waivers, please request that we send you one.

Registration and Cancellation: You will need to fill out our Domestic Registration Form, cancellation policy agreement, and liability waiver, and send it to us with a 50% deposit.
