Course Descriptions

Basic Rock: Rock 101

1 or 2 Days--No experience necessary: If you have been rock climbing in a gym, but have yet to venture outdoors, then this is the course for you. In our Basic Rock course we will introduce, review, and master the following skills:

  • Knots
  • Belaying and Ropework
  • Rappelling
  • Climbing Technique
  • Communication
  • Top Rope Anchors
Course Location--Durango, CO (X-Rock)

Rock Rescue: Rock 202

1 or 2 Days--Some experience preferred: A must do for ALL climbers. Self-suffiency, whether at your local crag or in the mountains, is essential for the safety of you and your climbing partner. If you haven't learned this stuff yet, don't you think it's time that you did? The following topics will be covered in the progression:

  • Belay Tie-Offs
  • Lowering Scenarios
  • Rope Ascension Methods
  • Rappelling with a Victim
  • Knot Passes
  • First Aid Considerations
Course Location--Durango, CO--East Animas

Intermediate Rock--Climbing Technique: Rock 201

2 Days--Some experience required: This course is best suited for climber's with at least a working knowledge of the topics covered in our Basic Rock course. The focus of the course will be on climbing technique for both traditional and sport routes. This is a great course for those who have the basics mastered and would like to take their climbing to the next level. The following topics will be covered in the progression:

  • Footwork
  • Body Position
  • Crack Climbing Technique
  • Rest Strategies
  • Mental Attitude and Focus
  • Strength Conditioning
Course Location--Durango, CO (East Animas and The Golf Wall)

Desert Rock Clinic: Rock 302

2 Days w/ optional 1 day Tower Extension: By enrolling in our Desert Rock Clinic, some of the best crack climbers in the business can help you to gain proficiency at desert sandstone crack climbing. A trip to the desert will improve your overall climbing ability, guaranteed. For those who would like to extend their stay by a day, we offer guided ascents of such classics as Castleton Tower, and North Six Shooter Peak. The following topics will be covered in the progression:

  • Hand Jams
  • Finger Locks
  • Off-Width Technique
  • Lead Climbing
  • Protection Placement
  • Mental Attitude and Focus
  • Strength Conditioning
Course Location--Indian Creek and Moab, UT

Advanced Techniques Course: Rock 301

2 Days--Some experience required: If your goal is learning how to lead and tackle the rigors of multi-pitch climbing, then our Advanced Techniques class was designed specifically with you in mind. The goal of the course will be to help prospective leaders develop good habits in their quest to become safe, competent, and strong lead climbers. The following topics will be covered in the progression:

  • Protection Placement Strategies
  • Anchoring
  • Multi-Pitch Systems
  • Multi-Pitch Rappelling Tactics
  • Communication
  • Mental Attitude and Focus
  • Rescue Considerations
