Domestic Guiding Positions:
We maintain a staff of 10 -15 guides and usually bring on 5 -6 new guides a year. In order to be considered for employment with Southwest Adventure Guides as a new hire climbing guide you must meet the following criteria. In general you must be a strong, experienced, and well rounded climber with excellent communication skills in order to be considered for a guiding position.
Special consideration is given to guides with certifications from American Avalanche institute, state emergency medical departments (EMT''s), wilderness medical associations, AMGA, UIAGM and those with college degrees in outdoor leadership.
Minimum requirements:
- Submit a detailed resume that describes your mountaineering, rock and ice climbing experience (list most important routes, location ,grades, and date of ascent) both on a professional level and on a personal level. This resume should include work experience, references and a cover letter explaining what your goals and expectations are in terms of a guiding profession
- Have at least five years of climbing experience that shows a broad range of experience in rock, ice and mountain ascents
- Have led at least 20 traditional, multi-pitch routes, with experience in at least two different areas (Cascades, Yosemite, Alaska, etc.)
- Have extensive multi-pitch rappelling experience
- Safely and comfortably lead any climb rated 5.10. and Lead WI 5 ice
- Possess equipment suitable for extended rock climbs and mountaineering trips
- Know the required hard skills (see list below)
- Be at least age 21
- Have, or have plans to get, current first aid and CPR certification. (preferably WFR or WEMT)
- Participate in Southwest Adventures Guides' Training Course
- Have a neat, clean and professional appearance and demeanor
- Have previous experience working and teaching with all age groups
International guiding opportunities
International guides are senior Southwest Adventure Guides that have superior skills, qualifications and experience.
In addition to complete mastery of the skills required to guide domestic trips, guides must have the following skills and experience:
- Speak the native language (usually Spanish)
- Previous international climbing and guiding experience
- Experience guiding trips in that particular country
- Have experience at a similar or greater altitude than the trip demands
- Be very knowledgeable regarding the area, mountain, climb, climate, culture, natural history, climbing history and attractions regarding the area that he will be guiding
- International guides must be very strong, capable, resourceful, highly professional and have solid guiding and people skills
Foreign suppliers and assistants - If you have a professional company that provides logistical support (transportation, human or animal support), own a hotel or hostel or are an experienced bi-lingual LOCAL guide you may contact us by email or regular mail. You must be located in the company in which we conduct trips (Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Nepal, China, Bhutan, Pakistan, India.,Thailand ,Tanzania, Kenya, France, Switzerland). We are not interested in support companies that sub-contract with other companies only companies that conduct or supply the services themselves.
